This print was created as a protection spell in visual form. It draws from a ritual in which a candle is dressed with protective oil, then rolled in herbs — rowan berries, chamomile, lavender, and star anise — before being lit to safeguard what matters most.
At the center of the image, a candle is held up to a mask. The mask acts as a taglock, an object that stands in for the person, place, or energy being protected. It carries a dual meaning. It can universally represent anyone, while also speaking to the desire to feel safe enough to remove the masks we wear and exist openly.
Every part of this print is made with intention. The ink is hand-mixed from natural indigo pigment, and infused with a few drops of my own protection oil made with witch hazel, lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, and clove. These elements are not just depicted. They are embedded into the process itself.
This piece is meant to hold and offer protection to the space and person it belongs to.
